All German Parties Agree: The Crisis Must be Used!

Posted by John Rosenthal

An article on the prospective EU/IMF bailout package for Greece in today’s (27 April) Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) notes that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble met yesterday with the leaders of all the parliamentary groups in the German Bundestag in order to discuss the issue. After the meeting, the leader of the Social Democratic group, Frank Walter Steinmeier, insisted, “The government has to say how it intends to put a stop to currency speculation.”

Apparently, in this matter the government and the opposition are one. And this means all the opposition, including also the Greens and the “post-Communist” Left Party. Thus, the FAZ continues:

Schäuble said that it is the government’s wish, as well as the wish of all the parliamentary groups, to use the crisis [die Krise...zu nutzen] in order to push forward regulation of the financial sector with greater urgency.
