Bloody Hands and Javier Solana

Posted by John Rosenthal

The following exchange is from an interview with Javier Solana [Italian link] that appeared in the Saturday, March 6, edition of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. Solana served as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy from 1999 until December of last year. The subject of the interview is international negotiations with Iran.

Corriere: Obama has been criticized for having extended his hand to a leadership that has its hands covered in blood. Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi has also said this.

Solana: We negotiated with them for years. So imagine my hands.

Lest there be any doubt, Solana goes on to defend the European “dialogue model” as he always has and to praise the Obama administration’s adoption of the EU approach as “a good thing, since it renders everyone’s position stronger.”
