Angela Merkel’s decisive victory over Social Democratic rival Frank-Walter Steinmeier in last Sunday’s German elections is bad news for Tehran and the Mullah regime’s nuclear aspirations. Consider, for instance, the controversy that erupted at the February 2006 edition of the annual Munich Security Conference, when one of the featured speakers at the conference not-so-subtly compared Ahmadinejad’s Iran to Hitler’s Germany. That speaker was not Donald Rumsfeld. It was Angela Merkel. And after four years of sharing power with Steinmeier and the SPD, Chancellor Merkel now has the chance to make German foreign policy her own.
