The “Peace” Candidate’s War Monument

Many commentators have noted that the site where Barack Obama will speak today in Berlin is associated with the Nazis. But in fact it is not merely associated with the Nazis. The scene for Obama’s speech today is, in effect, outright the creation of Adolf Hitler and his chief architect and urban planner Albert Speer. It was first employed for the purpose of political spectacle on April 20, 1939. The occasion: the celebration of the Führer’s 50th birthday.

The "Victory Column" as such, in front of which Obama will speak, is associated more precisely with something else: the German humiliation of France at the Battle of Sedan.
