Steinmeier in Syria

Posted by John Rosenthal

Just before turning up in Washington last week to consult with Condoleezza Rice, German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, went to Damascus to talk with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. No other European politician has done as much as Steinmeier to push the “Talk with Syria” line and indeed Steinmeier has already begun to follow this policy. This was in fact the German Foreign Minister’s second attempt to get together with the Syrian autocrat — the first having failed when Assad launched into an anti-Israeli tirade barely 24 hours before the scheduled meeting.

For much more, see Markus Bickel’s new article on World Politics Watch (translated by me): “Ahead of EU Presidency, Germany is Already Talking to Syria”.
