A former official in the Algerian civil service and the author of four previous novels, the Algerian novelist Boualem Sansal has recently published a new book titled Le village de l'Allemand: "The German's Village." Via the reflections of two brothers of Algerian origin living in the Parisian banlieues, it tells the story of the brothers' father: Hans Schiller, a hero of the Algerian war of independence as a member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) -- and, as so happens, before that an officer in the dreaded Nazi paramilitary force, the SS. For Boualem Sansal, "the line separating Islamism from Nazism is a thin one." Grégoire Leménager spoke with him for the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur. Osama Mostafa Hassan Nasr, better known as "Abu Omar", is the Egyptian cleric who was allegedly kidnapped in Milan in 2003 as part of the CIA "extraordinary renditions" program. Starting in 2002, Abu Omar was under intensive surveillance by the Italian police. Examination of the transcripts of his recorded conversations provides a clearer idea of just what he was up to before he went missing and why Italian authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest. Following the presentation of a new IAEA report that criticizes Iran for not being forthcoming about its nuclear program, Germany has threatened to increase the “pressure” on Iran. “Either we get reasonable answers to our questions,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned, “or the beginning of talks aimed at finding a diplomatic solution will have to be further delayed.” (Sources: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, 28 May; Reuters Deutschland)

 
The “six power” group, including Germany, leading negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program recently announced its willingness to offer Iran a new set of economic incentives to limit its program. As further reported in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of 28 May, Iran has thus far refused to meet with EU envoy Javier Solana who is supposed to present the offer.

The UN Human Rights Council tends to draw attention when it condemns Israel. But it is in fact not only Israel that the Council regards as a serious human rights violator: Switzerland is a problem too. When it emerged in mid-March that the perpetrator of a deadly suicide attack on American troops in Afghanistan had come from Germany, the American media showed little interest. A closer look at the bomber's itinerary reveals that it bears a remarkable resemblance to that of none other than Murat Kurnaz: the supposed "innocent man" who America is accused of having held without cause at Guantánamo for five years.

Did the Amin al-Husaini, the "Grand Mufti" of Jerusalem, know about the Nazis' ongoing program to exterminate European Jews when he lived in Berlin from 1941-1945? In my recent review of Klaus Gensicke's Der Mufti von Jerusalem und die Nationalsozialisten, I questioned whether a visit by a member of the Mufti's entourage to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin could be taken as proof that the Mufti also knew what was transpiring in the death camps further to the East, such as Auschwitz and Treblinka.

 
But Wolfgang G. Schwanitz, A German historian of the Middle East, has found more compelling evidence: namely, the Mufti's own words. "Up to now we have exterminated around three million of them" -- this, according to memoirs of the Mufti published in Damascus in 1999, is what Heinrich Himmler told him in the summer of 1943.
